You unfold the slip of paper and it's not your work bestie. It's the design lead. Or the friend whose HDB flat somehow looks like a magazine shoot. Suddenly that $50 cap feels a lot less like festive fun and a lot more like a taste test.
Three Secret Santa gifts that rise in size with the budget, from a small wrapped present to a Pâtisserie CLÉ Hazelnut Praline Log Cake in an open gift box.

The usual panic buys are a novelty desk toy, a generic card holder or a mug with a pun on it. They get a polite laugh, then quietly disappear by Chinese New Year. And in a group that notices design, everyone clocks who bought what.

The gifts that land well in these circles usually follow one rule: pick something they already do every day and give them a nicer version of it. Better coffee for their 8am, a room spray for the bathroom shelf, pastries to share at their desk. Look for small makers and good packaging. Gifts like these look pricier than they are, and they're hard to get wrong.

Below are our Secret Santa gift ideas for Singapore, sorted by the three budgets most groups go with. We've also included a pooling trick for tight budgets, a weekend shopping route through Joo Chiat, and the December timing details people tend to forget.

The short version
Budget The move Where to look

$75 A showpiece that gets opened in front of everyone Festive bakes made to order, like our Christmas collection

Before you shop

The Unspoken Rules of Secret Santa in Singapore

A bit of homework first. These take two minutes and save you from the most common Secret Santa fails.

Check dietary needs without blowing your cover

Food is the safest gift for someone with strong taste, right up until you give butter cookies to a vegan or Parma ham to a colleague who eats halal. Casually ask their desk neighbour. Better still, suggest a shared sign-up sheet where everyone notes allergies and preferences. You look organised and nobody has to guess. (A note on our own bakes: CLÉ isn't halal-certified, and our cakes contain gelatine, so they're not the right pick for halal or vegetarian recipients.)

Skip anything that needs their exact taste or size

Perfume, clothes and wall art are risky for anyone with a very particular style, because you're guessing at exactly what they care most about. Things that get used up are safer. Food, coffee or a room spray in a soft scent like fig or white tea gives them something nice without taking up space in a home they've styled carefully.

If you drew the boss, think "shareable"

Drawing your manager tends to go wrong in one of two ways. People either overspend to impress or choose something a bit too personal. Something lovely to eat avoids both. It's generous without being awkward, and they can share it with the team or bring it home to the family.

✦ The pooled-budget loophole

Most gift guides skip this one. If the cap is low, suggest drawing names in pairs or threes, so each team buys for one person with a combined budget. Three people at $25 have $75 to spend, which opens up much nicer options, and everyone still gets a gift. It also works when the whole team wants to chip in for the boss. See section 5 for pooled ideas.

The $25 tier

The Small Luxury

At $25, buy one good thing rather than several so-so ones. A single well-made item looks far more considered than a gift bag stuffed with filler.

  • For the one who reads ingredient labels: local bean-to-bar chocolate Singapore's craft chocolate makers do bars with gorgeous wrappers and flavours you won't find at the supermarket. Fossa Chocolate's local-flavour bars are a good place to start. Tie two contrasting bars together with ribbon and you've got a mini tasting flight.
  • For the one who's never without a cup: specialty coffee or tea Skip the supermarket beans. Pick up a bag from a local roaster like Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee, or a tin from a boutique tea house like Pryce Tea. Both come nicely packaged and work fine with whatever's in the office pantry.
  • For the one with the perfect bathroom shelf: a room spray Homegrown perfumeries like Artisan of Sense in Joo Chiat make room sprays and candles in small batches. A room spray is much less of a gamble than perfume, and a nice bottle can sit out on display.
  • For the list-maker: good stationery A well-bound notebook from an independent shop gets used every day, usually in meetings where everyone can see it. Try Cat Socrates or the new In Good Company flagship, both on Joo Chiat Road.
✦ Make $25 look like more

Wrapping is usually what makes a gift look cheap. Skip the glossy paper and reindeer prints. Plain kraft paper or tissue, cotton twine, a sprig of dried eucalyptus and a short handwritten note will do more for a $25 gift than spending an extra $10.

3

The $50 tier

The Considered Upgrade

With $50 you can buy a properly designed object, or put two things together that clearly belong together. Think about what would look good on their desk or shelf.

  • A handmade ceramic A cup, a small dish or a bud vase from a local studio is something they'll use daily. Every piece is slightly different, which this crowd loves. In Good Company's Joo Chiat flagship stocks local studios like Mudrock Ceramics and Dear Tuesday, and Tiger & Lotus down the road has handcrafted homeware.
  • Linen and organic cotton Good linen is something people love but rarely buy for themselves. Sojao and Sunday Bedding, both in Joo Chiat, carry smaller linen and organic cotton pieces that work well as gifts.
  • A tumbler that survives the CBD air-con In Singapore you go from 33°C outside to a meeting room that feels like a fridge, so a good insulated tumbler gets plenty of use. Japanese brand Kinto makes clean, minimal ones that look great on a desk.
  • The ritual pairing Put together two things that go with each other, like a loose-leaf tea and a handmade cup, or coffee beans and a bar of chocolate. It shows you've pictured them actually enjoying it on a slow Sunday morning.
You can tell a good Secret Santa gift by the room's reaction. Nobody needs it explained.

The $75 tier

The Showstopper

At $75, people expect something special, and everyone watches when it gets opened. That's when a festive bake works well. It's seasonal, it's made fresh for the day, and it's something to share, so the whole group gets to enjoy your gift.

  • In Good Company flagship (316) and Tiger & Lotus (317) Right next to each other. In Good Company has local ceramics, home fragrance and stationery. Tiger & Lotus has handcrafted homeware and woven baskets.
  • Heartware Store & Gallery (350B) Small keepsakes by local and international makers. Come here if you want something no one else in the group will have.

Quick answers

Secret Santa Questions We Get Asked

How much should you spend on Secret Santa in Singapore?

Whatever your group agrees on, and stay close to it. Most office and friend-group exchanges set a cap between $20 and $75. Going way over makes everyone else look stingy, and going way under looks like you didn't try. If the cap feels too low, suggest drawing in pairs and pooling budgets rather than quietly overspending.

What's a good Secret Santa gift for someone you barely know?

Pick something they'll use up, like good chocolate, specialty coffee or tea, or a festive bake to share. These feel generous without you having to guess their style, and they won't end up cluttering their home.

Is food an appropriate Secret Santa gift?

Yes, and it's often the best choice, as long as you check allergies and dietary needs (including halal and vegetarian) first. Good food is easy to share, feels festive, and won't end up forgotten in a drawer.

What can I get at the last minute that doesn't look last minute?

One good item from an independent shop, wrapped in plain paper with a handwritten note, beats a rushed department-store gift set every time. If you've got 48 hours, a made-to-order bake is about as polished as last-minute gets.
